How Search Engines View Your Blog
04/03/2011 05:27Hey folks, I know you may be interested in getting your blog started or learning more about blogging. We are here not so much to teach you how to blog but more so how to better get your blog read by other people. Your blog should represent your views. It is written by a human, you, and should read like humans talk. Rules of grammar and punctuation are for English class. How many people do you know that don't use a double negative or have a preposition at the end of their sentences? Who cares? As long as it reads well and conveys your exact meaning, then you have done your job. There are many sites that will help you improve your writing if you so desire. Let's look at how search engines view your blog.
One of the biggest misconceptions about search engines is thinking they rank websites. They don't rank websites. They rank web pages. We may use those two terms interchangeably but do know there is a difference. Once you enter a keyword in the search engine, it will list the web pages where that word or phrase is found. Look at the search engines like an index in the back of a book. The index lists important words in the book and tells you what page to find those words. The search engines indexes all the words on websites and tells you what web page those words are once you do a search for a specific word or phrase.
This is why your blogs content is important. Your blog is words. Usually, you are speaking about a specific topic. You want to gear your blog entries around a specific keyword or set of keywords. Part of this strategy is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you have been doing your research, you will be familiar with this term. Basically it puts your web pages in a position to be better seen by the search engine robots or spiders. Those are terms used to describe the methods in which search engines gather new information for search results.
When you are optimizing your page, realize that what you and other viewers see is totally different than what the search engines see. Most web designers are totally unaware on how search engines work and design sites with flash video and fancy graphics. The web pages they create are virtually invisible to the robots and spiders. The search engines need words. They are constantly looking for new, relevant content for their search engine results. This is why when you type in say the Chicago Bears, what pops up first is information about the Bears today, not the 1985 Superbowl winning team (Da Bears).
Search engines, like Google, have a specific algorithm (that constantly changes by the way) that determines what web page is most relevant to a specific set of keywords. The beauty of blogs is that you war constantly writing new stuff so you constantly have new information for the search engines. You just have to make your site more visible to the search engines. How do you do that? Great question. Will go into that one in another section. Stay tuned.
Internet Traffic for Your Blog
03/31/2011 05:04So you are starting up a blog or you have a blog and want to increase traffic. There are a few things you need to know about internet traffic and how search engines work. Knowing this little bit of information will help you understand how to structure your blog better to make it more visible to not only your readers but also the internet search engines.
What kind of traffic do you want? Most of us think the old fashioned way. We have a domain name, we advertise it and hope people type it in and visit our site. This is called direct traffic where your potential reader or customer types in your url "directly" to get to your website. This is good for your business but requires a lot of work advertising, finding people who are looking for your information in front of a computer to get ot your website.
Then there is paid traffic. This can be expensive. it's where you pay for some type of ad to drive traffic to your site. Whether it is banner ads or email listings, you are still hoping that the persom who sees your ad is looking for what you have.
A good way for you to get ranking for your blog is to have a lot of referral traffic. What this entails is to have other wevsites pointing to your blog. The more the better your chance of having search engines find your blog and rank it. This system of referral traffic usually comes from what is called anchor text. You have seen it and probably used it a thousand times during your own internet surfing. Anchor text is a word of phrase that links to another web page.
For the most part, you have to have real good content for someone else to link to your page. They have to love your stuff so much that they literally refer you site to other people by putting a link on their site. This is awesome, free and a great way for search engines to notice what you have in your blog. You can also create links to your blog from other blogs, backlinks, and bookmarking. The beauty of tis is that a lot of these methods are absolutely free. But to get a deep linking structure, it would take you a while to build multiple backlinks and bookmarks to make an impact on those who really know what they are doing when it comes to promoting their blog.
The last form of internet traffic is organic search engine traffic. This is where you type in a 'keyword' in Google or and of the other search engines, the search engine give you a list of many of the web pages that contain that set of keywords. When they click one of the sites from the search result, this is called 'organic' because the traffic came from a natural search rather than a paid one. Usually, if your website is not on the first couple of pages, more specifically on that first set of listings, you are very unlikely to be seen.
Why is this important? Because the people who use search engines are looking for something specific. If they find what they are looking for on your site, you are more likely to 'convert' that person on what you have to offer them. It's like being the first person to offer a man shoes who is looking for shoes. He is more likely to buy the shoes from you if that is what he is looking for. There are methods we will get into to help you increase your organic search engine traffic. All of these things you must consider to increase the readership of your blog. Talk to you later.
